The Blue Penguin

I learned on the news that there was come confusion about a penguin egg. The mom and dad didn't really know it was their egg or baby penguin, when it hatched. Zookeepers found it and raised the baby penguin like it was their baby. They would keep it in a cooler and feed it fish. To learn more, go to the following website for a video: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21134540/vp/25096766#25096766

I like penguins and saw lots of different types at Sea World last week. I saw: King Penguin, Emperor Penguin, Macaroni Penguin, and more!

Horny (Horned) Toad

In Texas, where I live, there used to be lots of Horny Toads. They are not frogs or toads, but are actually lizards. They don't live in Gilmer any more, but if you're lucky, maybe you will find one in the desert. Some live in California and eat grasshoppers, insects, and any other kind of bug. They are becoming endangered because of: fireants and harvester ants eating them; people using too many pesticides which kill horny toads and their food sources; and the destruction of the natural habitat.

When I went to Fort Davis in West Texas, the park rangers told me that if I found a horny toad to leave it alone because they are trying to increase the population in that area.

Horny toads can defend themselves in a crazy way. They can shoot blood from their eyes up to 3 feet! I think I would leave them alone just because of that!

I am glad that people are protecting this species.

My Friends Like Animals Too!

I have been talking with my friends about the animals they like.

My friend Sam likes the cheetah. I like this animal too because it is a very fast runner and has a cool pattern on its coat.

I have another friend Zach that likes the swordfish. I have learned more about this creature from reading books. It stabs its prey with its long sword-like nose. Its prey is schools of fish and tiny fish. This large fish can be very dangerous!

If any of my other friends want to learn about different animals, I will put them on this website!

Texas Blind Salamander

The Texas Blind Salamander is endangered. Help save endangered species. I am visiting San Marcos, Texas where the Texas Blind Salamander lives and here is the date 2008, February 17th. The Texas Blind Salamander (TBS) is about five inches long. The TBS is endangered because people pollute the areas that drain into the Edward's Aquifer and the Edward's Aquifer is where they live.

WHAT ANIMAL IS THIS?

Can you guess what animal this is?

This is the SLOTH BEAR. I learned about this creature in a National Geographic Magazine and also in a book I checked out from the school's library.

This bear eats fruit, ants, and termites. I bet a lot of people in East Texas wish they had sloth bears to protect their homes from termites!

The sloth bear is not the largest of bears, has long claws and lives in Asia.

I bet you had never heard of this type of bear before, huh?
